There is a longstanding tradition of artists reading other artists' work against the grain: viewing or interpreting it in a way that was clearly not intended. A famous example is Auguste Rodin, the French sculptor, who was inspired by Michelangelo's unfinished works, specifically sculptural fragments of torsos and limbs and the ''Slaves''...
Bad choreography crops up all too often, and yet nobody else today, now that Maurice Béjart and Roland Petit are no longer with us, makes the kind of awful ballet that is Boris Eifman's forte. Ken Russell's more sensationalist movies seem like models of restraint beside Mr. Eifman's lurid, overemphatic, far-from-coherent oeuvre. Mr. Eifman flaunts...
NEW YORK -- The art market is booming. With a smaller sale than Christie's the day before, Sotheby's on Wednesday night gave an even more convincing demonstration that buyers are as eager to pounce on major Impressionist and Modern works as they were in the giddiest days preceding the 2008 financial crisis. Of the 57 works offered, 50 sold for a...
Fold ud
