Charles John Huffam Dickens (7. februar 1812 – 9. juni 1870) var en engelsk, victoriansk forfatter, født i Landport i nærheden af Portsmouth. I 1814 flyttede familien til London og senere til Chatham. Han fik ikke megen formel skolegang, men lærte meget på Londons gader. De gader, som kom til at spille så stor en rolle i hans senere romaner. Dickens besluttede, at han ville være journalist, og som 22-årig fik han ansættelse på en londonavis.
I 1836 giftede han sig med Catherine Hogart. De fik 10 børn, men blev skilt i 1858. Dickens skrev mange skitser og noveller i forskellige magasiner og aviser. Med udgivelsen af Pickwick Klubben i 1836 begyndte en utrolig karriere, da det viste sig, at Dickens appellerede til mennesker i alle aldersgrupper.
