AUSTIN, Tex. EMMYLOU HARRIS summed up her attitude toward songwriting in one word. ''It's terrifying,'' she said over coffee after a morning radio appearance during last month's South by Southwest music festival. ''It's just this enormous blank page.'' Her new album, ''Hard Bargain'' (Nonesuch), due for release this week, is suffused with kindly...

AFTER releasing scores of albums, winning 12 Grammys and gaining a place in the Country Music Hall of Fame, Emmylou Harris still has one goal that she hasn't accomplished: playing the accordion. ''I thought I'd be able to learn it, but I've given up,'' Ms. Harris, 61, said. No matter. On ''All I Intended to Be'' (Nonesuch) she sings the type of...

Hun forlod i slutningen af 60'erne The University of North Carolina, hvor hun studerede dramatik for at blive folkesanger i New York.
Fold ud
