Stravinskij var den berømteste elev af Nikolaj Rimskij-Korsakov og var gennem en stor del af det 20. århundrede den mest fremtrædende klassiske komponist. Det som kendetegner hans musik mest, er den store inspiration fra folkemusik. Dette ses bl.a. på det meget udbredte brug af pentatone skalaer.
