Albright blev i 1993 udpeget som USA's FN ambassadør.
Hun blev udpeget som udenrigsminister af Bill Clinton den 5. december 1996. Efter en énstemmig godkendelse i senatet blev hun indsat 23. januar 1997. Hun blev dermed den første kvindelige udenrigsminister i USA's historie. Hun er blevet beskyldt for at have begået krigsforbrydelser ved at opretholde og støtte sanktionerne mod Irak.
