''Selections From the Private Collection of Robert Rauschenberg'' at the Gagosian Gallery is a kind of mash note to the art world. To bolster its holdings of contemporary classics the Art Institute of Chicago has bought ''Short Circuit'' by Robert Rauschenberg. The work is a seminal example of his ''Combine'' paintings, a term he coined to describe works that incorporate castoff objects like rubber tires, flatware or furniture.
